How to hand-wash silk

Silk scarves are luxurious accessories that can instantly elevate any outfit. However, they require careful maintenance to preserve their flawless appearance.

Follow this comprehensive tutorial for step-by-step instructions on cleaning silk scarves at home.

Step 1: Please make sure to read the label for instructions.

Check the care label on the clothing item for detailed cleaning instructions. Get guidance on the right water temperature and avoid using chemicals like bleach and alkaline detergents.

Step 2: . Fill the sink with cold water.

Add cold water to the sink or washbasin. Make sure to leave enough room in the sink while filling it so the garment can be fully submerged, and you can move your hands through the water without spilling it.

Step 3: Add the detergent

Using your hands, swirl the detergent into the wash water to distribute and dissolve it. Follow the dosage guidelines on the packaging and be careful not to use too much detergent, as this may cause residue build-up that can affect the appearance.

Step 4: Soak and submerge the clothing

After soaking the clothing in the detergent solution, gently swish it in the washing water with your hands to allow the fibers to be penetrated. Then, let the item soak for at least five minutes, but no more than fifteen.

Step 5. Empty the sink and remove the clothing’s wash water.

Pour out the wash water from the sink. To remove excess water from the clothing, gently press down without wringing, twisting, or handling the silk aggressively.

Step 6. Wrap in a soft cloth.

Take the clothing out of the sink and lay it on a clean, dry towel to absorb moisture. Gently roll it up in the towel to remove additional water.

Step 7. Air-dry flat.

Air-dry silk clothes on a drying rack with a flat mesh surface. Avoid hanging silk to dry, as the weight of the wet fabric can cause damage. Allow silk to air-dry in a cool area away from direct sunlight.
